Lindsay

Lindsay Armaou is currently a member of the Irish pop group B*WITCHED. Even though she can play the piano and guitar, in the band she keeps to doing vocals. The other band members are Sinéad O'Carroll, Keavy Lynch and Edele Lynch, who does lead vocals.

Lindsay was born 18 December 1980 in Athens, Greece and she's an only child. Her father is Greek and owns an hotel in Athens, her mother is Irish. In Greece she already got an English language education, but when Lindsay was thirteen, the family moved to Ireland. Together with the other band members Lindsay now lives in England, but she uses as much of her spare time as possible to visit family and friends in Greece and Ireland.

From the age of seven, Lindsay learned how to play the piano. When she was thirteen she added the guitar to that. Early on she got bitten by the performance bug, when she played her piano or guitar at school performances, and when she sang in the school choir. She knew she belonged on stage. And as a child she was already obsessed by music, listening to all music styles she could find and making her own tunes on her keyboard and guitar.

She took up kick boxing, which is where she met Keavy, but she doesn't have time any more to train for it. Another passion of hers is designing clothes and she designed her own dress for a school ball. Her school results were quite good and she earned a place at business college, but she got her chance to do something she wanted even more.

Being in a band like B*WITCHED, enjoying the success they do, has always been her dream. Meeting Keavy at the kick boxing class and discovering that they shared this dream, got everything started. Keavy had also got the other members together (the three called themselves D'Zire at the time) and they started to work on songs. They presented themselves to producer Ray Hedges, who initially was against the idea of yet another girl band. But in his words they "bewitched" him.

She believes that a dream can come true if you work hard for it. Hard work has indeed resulted in beautifully written songs, which stray from the normal pop lines and are a nice mix of different musical styles. The songs are also beautifully performed, mainly showcasing Edele's great voice, but also showing a beautiful chemistry in the several combinations of harmony singing they do. And when Lindsay sings part of Castles in the Air on her own, she shows that she has a great voice too. With My Superman, on which she sings lead vocals, it is clear she has feeling for rhythm as well.

Visually their performances are somewhat more complicated than what other pop bands do, since they do a larger mix of synchronous and individual moves. When the song calls for it, their dance routines are more dynamic than ever seen before. Sometimes they have to learn the choreography within a few days or hours, but they still do it perfectly, with style and feeling.

For the promotion they have to do many interviews and performances all over the world, keeping to a gruelling but rewarding schedule. While touring they are writing songs for the new album and using any free time to go into the studio to record those. It's all this hard work that has made them, quantifiably, the biggest band in history: their first four singles all entered the UK charts at the number one position, something nobody has ever achieved before.

The band has done many performances on tv shows and road shows, and they've been supporting various bands on tour in the US. At the end of 1999 they had their own tour, but this was in the UK and Ireland only, so far.

Also on the private and personal front I'll only write stuff here that's officially released; I do believe however that it's now official that Lindsay's with Lee Brennan: much happiness to them!

Trivia

In Greece people write with a different alphabet and presumably Lindsay's name is also originally written with Greek characters. My believe is that in Greek her name is spelled as (I haven't figured out yet how to do Greek characters in webpages): Lambda iota nu tau zeta eta, which would suggest a proper pronounciation as (pseudo-phonetics): Lintzee, or Lintdzee. At least the "ay" ending should not be pronounced the English way.

Lindsay seems to love pets: she has many cats and dogs herself, and whenever the band is photographed with the B*WITCHED cat Mutley, it is Lindsay who is holding it. The design of the album and of the official webpage and book also use a cat as Lindsay's symbol. When she was young she rescued a couple of cats from drowning.

She mentiones Mariah Carey, and Sheryl Crow, as one of her favourite singers and wishes she had a voice like that. In the guys department she seems to fancy Brad Pitt, judging by the amount of times she mentions him. If Brad also wishes to have three children then they could probably work something out. Her favourite actress is Meg Ryan.

When Lindsay took her first steps in learning to play the guitar, she had to leave Greece. Also at that time her hair went curly. I've no idea whether any of these events are related.

She has a driver license from Greece and drove the rest of B*WITCHED around in a US tv special. At home she has her own car, if I remember correctly. I didn't have any of that so soon after my 18th birthday!

The women, so also Lindsay, seem to eat chicken every single day. It's unknown whether that is because she likes it... Other favourite food she mentions is e.g. mango. She doesn't eat red meat.

I've been in Athens at the time Lindsay was there, but I can't remember meeting a five year old girl... Or paying much attention to those since I was sixteen at the time... Still doesn't stop me from fantasising that one of the hotels we stayed in was her father's and that I spent the night under the same roof as her... Silly me.

Lindsay is interested in philosophy and may study it in the future.

Her name (Lindsay Gael Christian Elaine Armaou) is almost always spelled wrong, e.g. on the official website. On the C'est La Vie single, her name was spelled as Linsday making B*WITCHED remark that it's just another day of the week. Together with another Lindsay (Amey) and B*WITCHED fan we have now decided that this day falls between Friday and Saturday, has an all day party and that on Linsday work, school and boring activities are forbidden. Sunday is abolished. Just so you know...

According to Lindsay Amey, the family names of both Lindsays mean 'love'.

Some typical quotes:

- I don't know enough about witches to say whether I believe in them or not

- We have hopes, but no expectations

- A dream can become reality if you work for it

- I've been in lust, but not in love, and there's a difference

- I feel I've fulfilled every dream I've ever had. So now I've got to think up loads more

In her own words, Lindsay is ambitious, laid back, bubbly, friendly, deep (sometimes).

Oh yeah, she also happens to be the most beautiful woman in the world.
